Senior Mechanic
Senior Mechanics perform all tractor and trailer estimates, diagnoses and corrections following standard operating procedures. You will perform all major and minor repairs in a proficient manner. You will also diagnose and repair all trailer electrical systems. Other aspects of this position include DOT inspections on all tank and repairs components and making best value and safety decisions to operate, repair or replace.
Duties and responsibilities
- Diagnose and repair problems for all external component, annual vehicle inspections, planned maintenance, brake jobs, lighting repairs, cab repairs, king pin replacement, steering, drive train components, suspension and Qualcomm/Sensor Trac.
- Read papers and electronic instructions to understand, document and close completed work orders. Utilize paper and computer systems (M5) to accurately create, track and complete work order repairs including the tracking of time (labor hours), parts used and work completed.
- Perform starting and charging system repairs, routine cooling diagnostics and re-charge, routine electrical diagnostics and repairs including common fault codes.
- Repair and replace components on the body, trailer, chassis and container to include roof replacements, panel and side post repair/replacement, rail splice/replacement, door header replacement, sub-frame replacement and major wreck repair.
- In bulk shops – diagnose and repair Hydra-Pac, product pump and compressor. Perform 4-month and annual tank inspection, 5-year Inspection, thickness testing, spark lining testing, valve diagnostics including vacuum and pressure valves, unloading valves, skin replacement, accident repair, pit welding and ABS diagnostics.
- Individually or in conjunction with another Mechanic, perform tractor planned maintenance including responsibility for resolving any equipment performance problems identified by the driver.
- When necessary, perform accident repairs on tractors or trailers including welding and complex component changes (engine swings, frame rebuilds, etc).
- Actively participates in Center of Excellenence programs.
- Complete the initial estimate for required repairs or direct another associate who can further diagnose and estimate the required repair, cost and repair timeline.
- Communicate with internal customers on such things as stances, wait times, reasons for repair decisions and status updates.
- If licensed, drive commercial equipment in the yard and on public roads. Commercial Drivers License (CDL) not required.
- Utilize parts book, the computer, service bulletins and other resources to research problems and identify and locate parts. Charge out parts removed from inventory and assist in maintaining parts inventory.
- Responsible for general janitorial duties.
