Master Mechanic
Master Mechanics diagnose, estimate and repair highly complex electrical and mechanical systems, primarily on tractors, while following standard operating procedures. You complete routine rebuilds and replacements, make best value and safety decisions to continue to operate, repair or replace and perform technical repairs and replacement. You will also utilize technical publications and other Internet-based manuals and check sheets. Some Master Mechanics in this role function as local shop subject matter experts on all tractor systems.
Duties and responsibilities
- Diagnose and repair problems in the engine, component parts and various other vehicle items (i.e. Qual Comm, tachometer, speedometer, power steering, power divider, U-joint, transmission, auto–shift transmission, rear end, A/C, starter, alternator).
- Use diagnostic software or other methods to identify electrical and mechanical problems related to all systems including engine, drive train, cab, brakes, suspension and electrical and communication systems.
- Read papers and electronic instructions to understand, document and close work orders. Utilize papers and computer system (M5) to accurately create, track, time and parts and complete work order repairs.
- Make decisions on whether a component can continue to operate or should be repaired/replaced, based on best overall value and safety impact.
- Individually or in conjunction with another Mechanic, perform tractor planned manintenance including responsibility for resolving any equipment performance problems identified by the driver.
- Communicate with internal and external customers on such things as stances, wait times, reasons for repair decisions and status updates.
- Act as a resource to the Tech Team, Warranty and Training Departments.
- Perform accident repairs on tractors or trailers including welding and complex component changes.
- Determine the initial estimate of required repairs or direct another Mechanic who can further diagnose and estimate the required repair, cost and repair timeline.
- Become a subject matter expert on new technology and share this knowledge with other associates.
- If licensed, drive commercial equipment in the yard and on public roads. Commercial Drivers License (CDL) not required.
- Charge out parts removed from inventory and assists in maintaining parts inventory.
- Responsible for general janitorial duties.
